WRITER’S BACKGROUND

Heidi Munan was born in Switzerland and educated in New Zealand. A graduate post-primary teacher, she has live in Sarawak since 1965. Heidi Munan is fond of reading, particularly old books about history and geography of Southeast Asia. When her children were young, their grandmother used to tell them stories: This developed the author’s interest in folk tales. She has written books about the daily life, customs, arts and handicrafts of her home state. Heidi Munan does research at the Sarawak Museum. She is a regular contributor to national and foreign newspapers and publications, including the MAS in-flight-magazine Going Places.

SYNOPSIS

The short story How Dalat Got Its Name is about how a small village on the Oya River acquired its name a long time ago. A power struggle between the former chief’s two elder sons causes bloodshed and destruction in the village. Hence, as reminder of the sad incident, the village is given the name Dalat, which means flies in the Melanau Language.

from the sentences above, we know that Dalat is a name for a small village in Sarawak... and it means 'flies'.

My dear Brenda. Dalat is a name of a village on the Oya River in Sarawak. The story itself is about how this village got its name. Dalat is in Melanau language, it means flies (lalat). Why there are flies, because there were war/ power strugle between the former's chief two elder son. This happened very long time ago, it is a legend/ folk tale.Because of the war, many people dies, that is why got flies.To remember the incident, so that it will never happen again, the village then named Dalat.

i like this story very much... the moral of the story really makes me feel happy to have a nice brother and sister.. no matter how much we argue but we still can find the solution...
